The inaugural Thembisa Mile also known as Thembisa Street Mile took place on 1 December 2012. The race comprises of a 1 Mile (1.6km) and a 10km (6.214 miles) events. The 10km was added to the event in 2014 when the race became an official road race.

The race is open to runners and walkers of all abilities from beginners to the elite or professionals.

The race is organised in partnership with Thembisa Athletics Club(TAC) and run in accordance with the rules and regulations of Central Gauteng Athletics, Athletics South Africa and World Athletics.
